What is a Vehicle Identification Number?
The Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN, is like a fingerprint for a vehicle. It is composed of 17 characters (letters and numbers), and each vehicle has its own distinct VIN. The VIN is used to run an Auto History Report.

Where is the Vehicle Identification Number located?
The VIN is located on a metal plate at the lower corner of the front windshield on the driver's side, below where you attach your inspection and/or registration stickers.

Is the Auto History Report available for all vehicles?
Auto History Reports are only available for vehicles manufactured in or after 1981, the year a 17-character VIN (see above) was made standard in the industry.

Is the Auto Research Report available for all vehicles?
Auto Research Reports are available on virtually every car, truck, SUV or van from 1990 to the present. If you would like an Auto Research Report on an earlier model, email us and we'll let you know immediately if we can custom-create one for you.

Where do you get all of your information from?
Since its inception in 1993, Car Detective's mission has always been to provide the consumer with everything he or she needs to know before purchasing or selling a new or used vehicle. With that in mind, we have created one of the largest databases of used vehicle information in the country. Utilizing vital information from various federal, state and local agencies, as well as used car experts and actual vehicle owners, we have developed a unique service not found anywhere else on or off the internet. We are constantly updating our databases to provide you with the most current information available.

Where do you find all of these resources?
Our automotive experts have scoured the internet to find the best automotive resources available. We have investigated hundreds of providers of products and services and narrowed them down to a select group of top providers that we feature on our site.
